If you want your sims to be able to create gorgeous ceramics you need to gain the sims 4 pottery skill.
This fun skill comes to the game with The Sims 4: Business & Hobbies and lets your sims create gorgeous pieces!
What is Pottery Good For?
The pottery skill is great for creating beautiful home decor pieces from candles to cute bowls.
Your sims are able to earn money through selling their ceramics or go ahead and mentor other sims to earn the skill too!
Your sims are also able to run a pottery business to make lots of money!
How to Gain The Sims 4 Pottery Skill
To get your sims started with gaining the pottery skill they need a few things but the most important is the Pottery Wheel by GFAUB. This item will cost your sim §525 and requires a chair for your sim to sit on!

To start creating ceramics you’ll click on the pottery wheel and choose craft new ceramic. A menu will open and your only option to start is a round vase, but you’ll unlock new stuff as you gain the sims 4 pottery skill.

You have the option to stop there and decorate with or sell an unglazed ceramic. However, if you want to change the vibe of the ceramic you’ll need to buy the Pottery Kiln by GFAUB for §725.

To use the kiln you’ll want to click on the ceramic your sim just made and choose glaze and you’ll be able to pick a design. There are so many options from blush, to modern, to minimalist.

When you max the skill you’ll even get the opportunity to glaze with unbreakable coating so your ceramics never break, how cool!
If you want to gain the sims 4 pottery skill without ever doing pottery, you can decide to just read pottery books instead. There are three skill books to have your sims read:
- Pottery Vol 1: From Blobs to Jobs
- Pottery Vol 2: Earth, Fire, and Art
- Pottery Vol 3: Artistic Expression Through Ceramics

Your sim will start with From Blobs to Jobs until they reach level 4 of the skill. Then, they’ll read Earth, Fire and Art until level 7 and finish with Artistic Expression Through Ceramics.
Ideal Mood for Pottery
If you’re a professional simmer you know that there is an ideal mood for every skill. When your sim is in the right mood they are going to gain skills more quickly, which is awesome for progressing and making more money.
If you want to gain the sims 4 pottery skill more quickly, you want your sim to be inspired. The easiest way to get inspired is to take a thoughtful shower.
Best Traits for Gaining The Sims 4 Pottery Skill
The traits you give your sims are so important because they can have an impact on skill gains. Here’s some good traits for crafting ceramics:
- Creative: Sims who are creative will get inspired moodlets more often which can aid in skill gains.
- Perfectionist: Sims who are a perfectionist will take longer to craft items, but those items usually come out higher quality which means they’ll sell for more simoleons.
- Cheerful: Cheerful sims get lots of happy moodlets that can stack with inspired to make it stronger.
You also should think about the lot traits you put on your sim’s household, here’s some that are helpful:
- Sunny Aspect: This trait comes with The Sims 4: City Living and will give your sims a random moodlet at 6 o’clock each evening. The trait will be either inspired, energized, or happy and you can use the inspired to your advantage when it happens.
- Study Spot: This trait comes with The Sims 4: Discover University and gives a skill gain boost to all skills.
How to Cheat The Pottery Skill
If you want your sims to be good at pottery but don’t want to put in the effort, you can cheat! It’s so easy to do and the cheat you need to know is stats.set_skill_level major_pottery 10 to max the skill.
If you want a different level of this skill, just change the 10 at the end to a number between 1 and 9!
Levels of The Sims 4 Pottery Skill
There are ten levels of the pottery skill for your sim to gain. As they improve their pottery skills they’ll be able to create new things and get faster and better at it in general!

Level 3 | Your sim can now make cake stands at the pottery wheel. |
Level 4 | Your sim can now make candle holders at the pottery wheel. |
Level 5 | Your sim can now mentor others in pottery and make oil burners at the pottery wheel. |

Selling Your Ceramics
You can’t fill your entire house with homemade ceramics, so if you want to earn money you need to sell them! There are three ways your sims can sell their ceramics with the sims 4 pottery skill.
The first way is to click directly on a finished ceramic (before or after glazing) and choose sell handmade ceramic and it will disappear and you’ll be paid immediately.

The next way you can sell your ceramics is directly through your sim’s inventory. You can drag them to the sell section and sell them easily this way too!

My absolute favourite way to sell my finished ceramics is by having a yard sale and selling them directly to other sims. To do this you need to purchase the Grassroots Street Stall for §400.

With this stall you can drag all of your ceramics into the table and click on it and choose to stock the table. Then you’ll get your sim to tend the table and you can click again to start a yard sale.

Once the yard sale begins random sims will start coming to see what you have to sell. The best way to get them to actually buy is click on the sims and click give sales pitch and sims are more likely to purchase from you.
Mentoring Pottery
Mentoring is a great way to pass your sim’s knowledge onto other sims. You are easily able to mentor the sims 4 pottery skill by clicking on the pottery table and clicking offer pottery mentoring and choosing a sim.

If you have The Sims 4: Business & Hobbies installed in your game you’ll even be able to mentor others for money. A sim with a maxed out pottery skill can earn §430 per hour!
Dealing With Broken Pottery
Sometimes your pottery won’t have the best time and it may break. This sucks, but it’s not the end of the world. You are able to click on broken ceramics and choose to repair ceramics and your sim will start gluing it back together.

My favourite part is that the lines are still visible and it reminds me of the Japanese concept of Kintsugi, or the beauty in broken things. I love this so much!

At level 10 you’ll unlock the ability to glaze with unbreakable coating. When you do this your ceramics will never break so I use this on any ceramics I plan to keep, but not on ones I plan to sell because who cares if they break after they’ve paid me!

Improving The Skill With DLC
When you add other DLC to your game you can create magic. There are a few packs that impact the sims 4 pottery skill!
Discover University
If you want different ways to gain skills without too much effort, you have the option to take skill classes. This comes with The Sims 4: Discover University and costs your sims §250 to take.

These classes are great and can be found on either University campus. You can also find an option to take these classes on your sim’s phone.
Nifty Knitting
One of my favourite packs for creative skills is The Sims 4: Nifty Knitting because it adds the ability to sell items on Plopsy. What is Plopsy? Well, think like Etsy but for The Sims!
When your sim finishes a pottery piece and it ends up in their inventory you can click on the piece and choose to list on plopsy and there’s a chance a sim will purchase it from this online marketplace.

I love this because it adds some realism to the game instead of just selling directly from your inventory to earn money.
