The Sims 4 Knitting Skill Guide

Your sims deserve a fun hobby and the sims 4 knitting skill comes to the game with The Sims 4: Nifty Knitting!

With this skill your sims can create gorgeous knit items, wear them or sell them and just have a great time!

What is The Knitting Skill Good For?

The knitting skill is a super fun one, your sims are able to create gorgeous pieces that they can wear and gift to others.

Your sims are able to sell these items on the Plopsy platform that comes with this pack, which works like Etsy!

How to Gain The Sims 4 Knitting Skill

To start gaining this skill you’ll need to purchase a yarn basket from the build catalog. There are two to choose from and once you purchase it you need to put it in your sim’s inventory.

When you first start gaining the skill you’ll only be able to knit beanies, but as you gain the skill you’ll unlock options like socks, hanging planters, rugs and eventually sweaters.

Choosing a knitting project will cost a bit of money, which makes sense because yarn isn’t cheap. Your sim will find a spot to sit and will work on the project until its done or you cancel the interaction.

When the item is done it will appear in your sim’s inventory and you have options to choose from when you click it. You can frog it and get some of the money you spent back, you can list it on plopsy (we’ll get into that later) or you can donate it to charity!

If you don’t want your sims to earn the skill through knitting physically, you have the option to read books instead. These knitting skill books can be purchased on any bookcase in the game, there are three knitting books you can buy:

  • Knitting Vol 1: k2tog & The Basics of Yarn
  • Knitting Vol 2: The Diagonal Lace Stripe Stitch & Friends
  • Knitting Vol 3: Knitting Backwards With Your Eyes Closed

Your sim will start by reading K2TOG & The Basics of Yarn from level 1 to level 4 and at that point you’ll want to move on to The Diagonal Lace Stripe Stitch & Friends. That book will work from level 4 to level 7, then you’ll move on to the last book to complete the skill!

Ideal Mood for Knitting

The emotions system was a huge selling point for The Sims 4 and the mood your sims are in has a huge impact on their skill gains. A sim who is in the right mood will gain skills more quickly!

The ideal mood to gain the sims 4 knitting skill is going to be inspired, which makes sense because it’s a creative skill. You can easily get inspired by getting your sims to take a thoughtful shower.

Best Traits To Gain The Knitting Skill

When you’re creating a sim (or aging them up) you need to make sure you think about the skills your sim will gain when choosing their traits. You should choose traits like the following for a sim who wants to pursue knitting:

  • Creative: This is a great trait because sims who are creative will gain inspired moodlets more often
  • Cheerful: This is good for all sims because these sims tend to be happy more often which can stack with inspired
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Sims with this trait will gain skills slowly at first, but a lot faster later on

You also need to consider the types of lot traits you add to your sim’s lot.

  • Sunny Aspect: This comes with The Sims 4: City Living and will give a sim a random moodlet at 6 PM each night, either inspired, energized, or happy. You can use those inspired moodlets to your advantage.

How to Cheat The Sims 4 Knitting Skill

There are so many skills to gain and sometimes you don’t want to put in the effort to gain them naturally, so it’s time to cheat. If you want to cheat the knitting skill you need to know stats.set_skill_level major_knitting 10 to max out the skill.

If you want a different level of the sims 4 knitting skill you’ll just want to change the 10 at the end to whatever level of the skill you’d rather have from 1-9.

Levels of the Sims 4 Knitting Skill

There are 10 levels of the knitting skill for your sims to gain and as you work through them your sims will unlock new stuff to knit!

Skill LevelLevel Unlocks
Level 1Your sim’s new skill in knitting will allow them to create amazing stitched artwork. The higher the skill level, the more knittables they can knit.
Level 2Your sim can now knit socks. A sock is something you wear on your foot, with or without a shoe! How delightful!
Level 3Your sim can now knit furnishings. Mailboxes with cozies, and plant holders for everyone… huzzah!
Level 4Your sim can now knit rugs. Rugs are big flat things that go on the floor!

Selling Knit Items on Plopsy

The best addition to selling items in the game comes with this pack and that is Plopsy! Picture Etsy, but in The Sims!

Plopsy allows your sims to list their items for sale on Plopsy and ship items that sell and even get reviews that are pretty funny!

To do this you’ll want to go to a finished item in your sim’s inventory and choose list on plopsy and the listing for the item will turn pink and have a timer until it expires. You’ll need to re-list it if it expires and pay the fee again, they made that too realistic just like Etsy.

You can hover over the listing in your sim’s inventory to see how much longer you have until it expires.

If someone wants to purchase an item from your listing you’ll get a notification letting you know and the listing in your sim’s inventory will turn blue. When you hover over that blue listing you’ll see the price that they want to purchase it for.

To send the item you can click on that listing and choose to ship on plopsy and your sim will send it away in the mailbox and your sim will get paid.

Sometime after that you’ll get a notification with a fun review that are pretty silly!

This is one of my favourite ways to sell items in The Sims 4 because it has that real-world feel to it. You can sell so many different items with this from sculptures made with the handiness skill to art that your sims have painted with the painting skill and everything in between!

Wearing Your Knitwear

When your sim completes a knit item it’ll end up in their inventory and you have the option to add to wardrobe. This is great because it means your sims can actually wear these items!

When you click on this you’ll get a notification telling you it’s been added to their wardrobe and is available for everyone in this household. You can go into create-a-sim and change the sim’s outfits to something they made themselves!

Donating Your Knits

One of the options you have for your knits is to donate them to charity. This is something that will make your sims feel good and can give them a 2 hour +1 inspired moodlet that you can use to make more high-quality knits!

Teaching The Sims 4 Knitting Skill

At level 5 of the sims 4 knitting skill you’re able to start passing on this skill to other sims. This is fun because you can even teach kids to knit which is precious. You’ll get the teach to knit interaction available to you and your sim and the other sim will sit somewhere together to learn!

The Sweater Curse

As a knitter, I’ve known about the sweater curse for a while. The basics of this IRL is that if you hand knit or crochet a sweater for your partner it will lead to them breaking up with you. So, of course, EA decided that we needed this in The Sims 4: Nifty Knitting and I love them for that.

So, how does this work? Well immediately after gifting the sweater to your partner your sim and the recipient sim will get a tense moodlet that will last seven days which is an insane amount of time.

Any time that these two sims do a romantic interaction in the time that these moodlets are active they are going to lose romance relationship points!

If you want the couple to stay together, avoid romantic interactions for the entire time that this moodlet is active!

Pro Tip: You can have a sim reverse the curse if they have finished the lord/lady of the knits aspiration and have the sacred knitting knowledge trait!

Gaining The Sims 4 Knitting Skill With Discover University

When you add The Sims 4: Discover University to your game your sims unlock the ability to take skill classes. These are great because it’s a very passive way to earn a skill without having to put in much effort, but it does cost money.

You can find the option to take these classes on your sim’s phone as well!
