The Sims 4 Gemology Skill Guide

If you’ve ever desired to have crystals around your sim all the time, you’ll love the sims 4 gemology skill.

This skill comes to the game with The Sims 4: Crystal Creations and is super fun to play around with.

What is Gemology Good For?

The gemology skill allows your sims to create their own jewelry and gemstones that have special abilities when charged.

Your sims can influence their mood, protect themselves from death and more.

Plus, your sims can sell these finished items for money which is a great way to make a side income.

How to Gain The Sims 4 Gemology Skill

There are a few ways that you can start gaining the gemology skill. The first way is to go around the world and collect crystals and metals that you can use to create things!

You can find these in two ways, either by digging rocks or digging up dirt piles.

At level 3 of the skill your sims will be more likely to find metals and crystals when digging up rocks!

The best way to gain the skill is to get your hands on The All-In-One Gemology Table by Humphrey Inc.

Once you have the gemology table in your sim’s house you’re ready to start gaining the sims 4 gemology skill. To start you can click and choose to cut a gemstone and choose which type you’d like to make.

You’re going to be able to choose the cut and crystal type for your gemstone. Don’t worry, as you gain the skill your sim will unlock all the different shapes.

When your sim is done with this item they’ll have it sitting on the gemology table and your sim can view it, sell it or put it in their inventory. However, they really should go charge it which we’ll go over later.

To gain the skill while creating jewelry you can choose to design random jewelry and make no choices which is easier. Or you can choose to choose the elements yourself by choosing design jewelry.

When you choose to design it you’ll be able to choose the design for your jewelry, the type of crystal and the type of metal used.

If you have crystals or metals in your sim’s inventory you can use those to save money on crafting your items!

Ideal Mood for Practicing Gemology

Each skill in The Sims 4 has an ideal mood attached to it that will help your sim gain that skill faster. For the sims 4 gemology skill you’ll find that the ideal mood is focused.

The easiest way to get your sims feeling focused is to get them to ponder chess moves on a chess table. Or add the Practice Makes Perfect trait to your sim and they’ll get focused a ton!

Best Traits for Gaining The Sims 4 Gemology Skill

When you create your sim you’ll want to consider types of traits they have so they can earn skills faster. Some helpful options for the gemology skill are:

  • Genius: Sims with the genius trait will get random focused moodlets that can help them gain this skill faster.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Sims with this trait start gaining skills slower, but then get faster as time goes. Plus, they get really strong focused moodlets!
  • Quick Learner: Sims get this trait when they start with a knowledge aspiration and it gains them all skills slightly faster.

You may also want to add lot traits to your sim’s household to gain those benefits too!

  • Study Spot: This trait comes with Discover University and gives slight skill gain improvements to all skills.

How to Cheat The Gemology Skill

If you want to gain the skill without any effort on your part, cheat it. Do it. We won’t judge! The only thing you need to know is stats.set_skill_level major_gemology 10 to max the skill.

Want a different level of the skill? Change the 10 at the end to another number between 1 and 9!

Levels of The Sims 4 Gemology Skill

There are ten levels of the gemology skill for your sims to gain. As you improve this skill your sims are going to unlock new abilities and fun interactions.

Charging Your Crystals

If you want to get the most out of your crystal creations with the sims 4 gemology skill you need to have the Mystical Moonlight Crystal Grid. Why? Well, this allows your sim to charge their crystals to have cool results.

A screenshot from The Sims 4 of the Mystical Moonlight Crystal Grid

You want to place this item outside and click on it to choose to charge jewelry and crystal items. These items will charge overnight from 7pm to 7am and you can hover over the item to see how long until items are charged fully.

In the morning the entire set of items will be glowing wildly. You can click on this and choose collect fully charged items and everything will appear in your sim’s inventory.

Your items will stay charged for 48 hours and will impact your sims when they are charged. You’ll see the effects of gemstones when a sim is in the same room and see the effects of jewelry when a sim is wearing it.

Wearing Your Handmade Jewelry

If you finish a piece of jewelry and want your sim to start wearing it, you have that option! You just need to click on the piece, either on a table or in your sim’s inventory and choose wear.

You’ll get to choose if you want to wear it with all outfits which means your sims will wear it with active, sleep, party, literally everything, or just with the current outfit your sim is wearing.

If you’ve charged the item before putting it on, you’re in luck. Your sim will receive positive benefits while wearing the item until the charge runs out.

For example, this bracelet made with baconite with peach quartz gives your sims a +1 Happy moodlet and some cool abilities.

While wearing this your sim will increase their relationship with family members faster and can also make angry moodlets fade away faster than other sims. How cool!

Effects of Charging Gems

When you choose the types of crystals and metals you want to use, you’ll notice effects listed that are different for each type of crystal. However, these are only going to work if you charge your gems and jewelry first.

There are so many different impacts these can have on your sims, it would take forever to list them all but lets go over a few of my favourites.

  • Amber: Sims will not start fires when cooking
  • Jet: Sims can summon the grim reaper and will succeed when pleading for someone’s life
  • Shinolite: Improves chances of twins or triplets
  • Hematite: Sim cannot die

These are seriously so fun and can have a big impact on your gameplay. Other crystals can impact skill gains, relationships and more.

Mentoring The Sims 4 Gemology Skill

When your sim reaches level five of the skill they’ll unlock the ability to start mentoring gemology. The benefit of this is that the sim who is being mentored with gain the skill faster than if they were to do it alone.

With The Sims 4: Business & Hobbies installed in your game you can even start mentoring for money. A sim with a maxed skill can earn §430 per hour doing this which is a lot of money!

Making Money With Gemology

Selling your creations is a great way to earn an income and is super fun compared to just using the painting skill for the 100th time.

There are several factors that are going to influence how much you can make from selling these items. The first being your sim’s level in the sims 4 gemology skill. Sims with a higher level will create higher quality pieces.

You can hover over any item in your inventory to see its quality and your sims will earn more from high quality items. Another thing that impacts the quality is your sim’s mood when creating it, a sim who is focused will make higher quality items.

The final thing you need to know is that charged gems and jewelry will earn more money. For example, this heart shaped crystal was worth §1,072 before it was charged and §1,340 after charging so its worth it to place it in the moonlight overnight.

You have a few options for selling your pieces, the first being to just click on it and choose the sell option. If you want a more realistic option you can purchase the Classically Cool Sales Table that comes with this pack.

You’ll want to create many pieces of jewelry to sell and drag them all into this table. Then, choose stock table and tend table and then start yard sale.

Sims will start appearing and you can click on them and choose give sales pitch to convince them to buy your goods! It’s a much more fun way to sell items your sims have made!

Improving The Skill With DLC

Adding other DLC makes the game more fun, and there is some DLC that can effect your gemology skill gameplay!

Discover University

When you have The Sims 4: Discover University installed in your game your sims can take skill classes. The sims 4 gemology skill class will cost your sim §250 and a few hours of their time. They’ll leave with more skill than they went in with!

A screenshot from The Sims 4 showing how your sims can take a gemology skill class

You can take these classes from your sims phone or on either University campus!

Nifty Knitting

If you add The Sims 4: Nifty Knitting to your game you are able to sell your handmade jewelry on Plopsy. What’s Plopsy? It’s the Etsy of The Sims 4!

Once you complete a piece of jewelry you’ll want to click on it and choose list on plopsy and it will charge your sim §5. Typical, Etsy fees are out of control.

A screenshot from The Sims 4 showing how to list a ring on plopsy

When you do this it’ll be in your inventory with a pink listing and you can hover over it to see its listing details.

When a sim decides they’d like to purchase your item you’ll get a notification and the listing will turn blue. You can then click on the item in your inventory and choose ship on plopsy and your sim will go send it off at the mailbox and you’ll get paid.

High School Years

If you have The Sims 4: High School Years installed in your game your sims are able to gain the entrepreneur skill any time they sell a crystal creation… on Plopsy. So techncially you’d need Nifty Knitting too.

I tested this with using the yard sale table and my sim didn’t gain any percentage of the entrepreneur skill so that’s weird.
