How to Care for Cows in The Sims 4

Cows are one of my favourite animals so they deserve for you to know how to care for cows in The Sims 4!

These adorable animals from The Sims 4: Cottage Living let you have gorgeous cows and even feed them cool treats to be able to get fancy milk.

How to Care for Cows in The Sims 4

Caring for your cows has a few categories which are hunger, hygiene and attention. All of these work together to determine the happiness of your cow overall.

You can hover of your cow at any time to see how they’re doing in all of these categories!

Keeping Them Fed

Of course you need to feed your cow daily and you have two options to do this. The first way you can feed your cow is by hand. You’ll click on the cow and choose to feed them and this will cost a few simoleons.

Your second option is to make sure that the animal house has a full feed by clicking on it and choosing refill feed. Your cow will get their hunger need up every time they go inside of the building.

If you want to have the food stay full always you can also upgrade the animal house with an auto-feeder! You’ll need to get livestock upgrade parts to do this which you get by doing errands for sims in the world.

Keeping Them Socialized

When you hover over your cow you’ll see a section for attention which is the cow’s social need. You’ll want to do social interactions that are nice (ignore the mischief ones if you care about your cow) a couple times a day.

You can also feed your cow an animal party treat if you want to increase their social need without as much effort.

Keeping Them Clean

Hygiene is so important for animals and you’ll see your cow leave their house covered in dirt from time to time. You’ll want to click on your cow at least once a day and choose to clean them to keep them clean.

You’ll also need to keep their house clean by clicking on it and choosing to clean that as well. Your cow will get dirty quicker if their home is also dirty!

How to Make Cows Live Longer

Of course we want all of our animals to live longer and you can do that with cows too. You have two options to get them to live longer with the first option being to feed your cow a healthy treat which you can get at the garden stall in the Finchwick neighbourhood.

Your second option is to install the comfort life care extender upgrade on your cow’s animal house. You’ll need to have livestock upgrade parts which you get through completing errands for sims.

Getting Milk From Cows

Cows are milk producers meaning that each day you can click on your cow and choose to milk them. This will give you multiple bottles of milk that you can sell or use for cooking.

You can either choose to sell the milk for money or place it in your sim’s fridge to save money on cooking and groceries.

Getting Special Types of Milk

The best types of milk you can get in terms of value are the special types from feeding animal treats to your cow. These animal treats are obtained for the first time through gameplay so you can do the following things to get these treats:

  • Running errands for sims
  • Getting gifts from birds and rabbits
  • Winning at The Finchwick Fair
  • Purchasing them at the garden stall

After you’ve fed a treat for the first time you can start creating them on the fridge if you have the right ingredients. Below you’ll see each type of treat and the kind of milk you’ll get in return when you milk your cow.

Only one type of treat changes the look of your sim visually and that’s the rainbow milk. This will turn your cow into a rainbow cow until you milk them and is the best cow type to win the cow competition at The Finchwick Fair.

End of Life for Cows

Cows don’t live forever, unfortunately. Your cow will age up from young adult, to adult and eventually to elder. Eventually you’ll get a notification that says “Your cow is getting on in years. The poor, ole fella. Hope there’s a few more pets left till the reaper comes for a visit.”

A few days later you’ll get a notification saying “Your cow’s time has come and now they’ll be strolling around those rolling green hills in the sky.”

When you see that notification The Grim Reaper will appear and will take your cow away, it’s so sad, especially if your sim had a good relationship with their cow.

You’ll even see a +3 Sad moodlet called My Poor Cow that says “Your sim’s cow has now left for greener pastures, but there will always be a cow shaped space in their heart for their friend.”
