How to Care for Chickens in The Sims 4
If you want to have happy animals you’ll need to understand all the ways you can care for chickens in The Sims 4.
Chickens come to the game with The Sims 4: Cottage Living and are probably my favourite of the farm animals!
How to Care for Chickens in The Sims 4
There are a few categories you need to pay attention to for chickens and these are hygiene, hunger and attention. The level of all of these will increase their happiness.
You can see how your sim is doing at any moment by hovering over them. You’ll see their current starts for their hunger, socialization and overall happiness.
Feeding Your Chickens
There are a few ways you can feed your chickens in the game. The first way is by clicking on the chicken coop and choosing scatter feed nearby and your sim will drop around six piles of chicken feed.
Your next option is to click on an individual chicken and choose feed for four simoleons. This will feed that one chicken but none of the others.
Your final option is to use the handiness skill to add an auto-feeder to the chicken coop. This means any time that a chicken goes inside the coop, their hunger will be satisfied.
Keeping Them Socialized
A big part of keeping your chickens happy is having your sim socialize with them. You’ll click on your chicken and choose socialize and pick any of the positive interactions.
You can also feed your chicken an animal party treat to have their socialization increase.
Keeping them Clean
Chickens don’t need to be cleaned individually like you need to with llamas or cows. You’ll want to keep the coop clean!
All you need to do is click on the chicken coop and choose to clean it and do this often so they don’t get stinky!
You can hover over the coop at any time to see the cleanliness level and when it gets dirty enough it’ll start to smell and your chickens will stink too.
Keeping Them Safe
Something you need to worry about is wild foxes. These little creatures can actually harm your chickens and eat them, so you want to keep them protected. You have a few options for this.
You can choose to do nothing and then just shoo away foxes when they appear, but sometimes that won’t be possible so it’s not the best option.
Your next option is to install a fox alarm on your chicken coop with the handiness skill. You’ll need to do errands for people around the world to get livestock upgrade parts to do this, but it’s worth it.
Finally, you can build a fence around the chicken coop and add a gate that is locked for everyone but your sim. This will stop foxes from being able to come in the area.
How to Make Chickens Live Longer
There are two ways you can extend the life of your chickens! The first way is by feeding them a healthy treat which you can get from the garden stall in Finchwick.
The other way you can do this is by installing an upgrade on the chicken coop. You’ll click upgrade and choose the comfort care life extender.
You’ll need to have livestock upgrade parts to do this and you can get those by doing errands for sims around the world.
Getting Eggs from Chickens
As long as you have at least one hen in your chicken coop you’ll be able to click on the coop once per day and choose collect eggs.
There are a bunch of different eggs you can get including colourful eggs and hatchable eggs!
Getting Hatchable Eggs
If you have at least one rooster in your chicken coop they are able to fertilize the eggs and turn them into hatchable eggs that you can leave in the coop to turn into chickens.
You can even give a rooster a flirty treat to increase the likelihood of getting a hatchable egg.
To hatch the egg you’ll collect it then drag it into the front of the chicken coop. You can hover over it and see how long until they can hatch.
Once that timer runs out you can click on the coop and choose hatch eggs and you’ll get a new chicken.
Getting Colourful Eggs
There are animal treats that your sim can get through gameplay and when you feed them to your chickens they can change the colour of the eggs you can get. Here’s a list of the treats and their results:

You can also get golden eggs by having your hens be well taken care of. Happy chickens will create golden eggs!
End of Life for Chickens
Nothing lasts forever and your chickens will eventually pass away too. You’ll get a notification that you chicken has become an elder and that it’s almost their time a few days before.
When it’s time you’ll get a notification that says “Your chicken’s time has come and now they’ll be strolling around those rolling green hills in the sky.”
When you get that notification the Grim Reaper will appear and will reap the chicken and your sim can get a sad moodlet from this.
Pro Tip: Having an evil chicken on your lot can protect your chicken’s from The Grim Reaper giving them a few extra days. You just need to befriend the chicken and then ask them for help!
