Where to Catch Each Butterfly and Moth in The Sims 4

I made it my mission to find where to catch each butterfly and moth in The Sims 4.

There are so many butterflies to catch in The Sims 4: Adventure Awaits and finding them all was so much fun.

In this guide I’ll show you exactly where to catch each butterfly in The Sims 4 so you can complete this collection!

Common Butterflies

Banded King Shoemaker Butterfly

“Where Wanderwood Wild’s path meets easel’s art, or the bridge’s end, a butterfly darts. During the day’s light, find this kingly cobbler in its flight.”

There are two locations for the banded king shoemaker. Both of them are located in Wanderwood Wild’s in the area between the waterfall and the geyser. The first one is located at the end of a small bridge going from the residential area to the path area.

The second is located along that path near a random easel that’s placed at the top of the path. Both of these appear at 6AM and disappear at 6PM

Cordelian Butterfly

“Along Jellyfish Junction’s shores in glimmery light, a pirate’s lover takes her flight. Spotted daily, in lilac attire, she is a princess whose legend never tires.”

A screenshot from The Sims 4 showing the location for a cordelian butterfly

In the Jellyfish Junction neighbourhood there is a rock formation around a beach in the bottom corner. This is where the Cordelian butterfly will appear. This butterfly was available from 6AM until 6PM so you can only find it in the day time.

Dina Yellow Butterfly

“In Crystal Valley, where treasures unfold, miss Dina floats like sun and gold. Spotted in the midday gleam, find this beauty by the miner’s stream.”

To find the Dina Yellow Butterfly you’ll want to travel to the Crystal Valley Neighbourhood. You’ll be looking in the large grassy area near the mine shaft to find this butterfly. It appears at 6AM and disappears at 6PM so you can only find it during the day.

Glasswing Butterfly

“In Wanderwood Wilds’ path near the waterfall’s gleam, a butterfly’s wings shimmer, nearly unseen. Seek in the day’s gentle light, amidst the foliage, a translucent sight.”

This butterfly is located near the waterfall in Wanderwood Wilds. You’ll find it on the land area to the right of the waterfall. Appeared for my sim at 10AM and disappeared at 6PM, so it’s only available a few hours per day.

Goliath Silk Moth

“In Crystal Valley and Jellyfish Junction, at sun’s fall, a Goliath of moths heeds night’s call. Nightly when most sims dream, seek this moth where the city lights gleam.”

A screenshot from The Sims 4 showing the location to find a Goliath silk moth on the map

The Goliath Silk Moth is found in the Crystal Valley or Jellyfish Junction neighbourhoods at night. I had this moth appear for me starting at 6PM and disappeared at 6AM.

You’ll see this one all around the buildings once it’s dark outside. They seem to flock to bright areas with lights around. I found three in one small area, so you can get a lot of these rather quick.

Richmond Birdwing Butterfly

“In Wanderwood Wilds where the Rangers reside, a Birdwing’s fluttering is hard to hide. Search in bushes, and flowers too, near the station, a black, yellow, teal hue.”

To find the Richmond Birdwing butterfly you’ll need to travel to any of the lots in Wanderwood Wilds. You’re looking for the Ranger home which is near the playground lot.

These butterflies will start appearing at 6AM and will disappear at 6PM so you have 12 hours to find this one.

Uncommon Butterflies

Sphinx Moth

“At the fire festival’s heart, a mysterious sphinx plays its part. Near the flame, in wilderness’ domain , discover this moth where stories reign.”

To find the Sphinx Moth you’ll want to travel to the ‘Round The Fire Festival that happens from 7PM to 2AM every Saturday and Sunday.

There will be a few of these moths around, but I quickly found one right near the bonfire! They will be there for the entirety of the festival, so no worries if you show up later in the evening.

Owl Butterfly

“In Wanderwood Wilds, by the water’s embrace, owl eyes hide in a leafy place. A tower stands guard near where this mystery lies. Find it before the daylight dies.”

The Owl butterfly is found near the large Ranger tower on the left hand side of the Wanderwood Wilds neighbourhood. You’ll want to have your camera facing the water from the tower to be able to see the Owl butterfly. You’ll find it starting at 6AM until 6PM.

Jorjan Birdwing Butterfly

“At a festival where young and old convene, miss butterfly Jorja joins the scene. In purple grace, where meals abound, a butterfly who goes where friends are found.”

The Jorjan Birdwing Butterfly is found at the Sunrise, Sunset festival. This festival happens on both Saturday and Sunday between 1PM and 6PM.

At the festival I found two sets of this butterfly. The first one was by the food cart and the other one was on the other side of the giant playground.

Grim’s-Head Hawkmoth

“On Jellyfish Junction shores, when the moon is new, a moth gathers for a bioluminescent view. With death’s embrace and the Reaper’s grace, find this moth in its haunting space.”

This moth is available during the Glow and Flow festival which happens on a new moon. You’ll find it on the edge of the map in Jellyfish Junction near the water which is bioluminescent during this time. The moth was there from 7PM to 2AM.

You can see the timing for the next new moon on the household calendar at any time to plan for when to get this moth.

Rare Butterflies

Cryptid Moth

“In the dark of night on Crystal Valley’s land, a Cryptid Moth lurks. The mystery expands. In the foliage near the Plumbird’s lair, solve the quest to find it there.”

A screenshot from The Sims 4 showing the location of the peculiar plumbird's lair

This one took me the longest to figure out because you need to finish all of the Peculiar Plumbird quests. This is a character you’ll find in Crystal Valley and they have a nest in the middle of some trees.

A screenshot from The Sims 4 showing the first three Peculiar Plumbird quests

You can click on the nest and get a quest and you’ll initially see three quests to choose from. Once you finish those three quests you’ll get the community spirit quest and finishing that will allow your sim to see the Cryptid Moth.

After finishing these quests you can go to the location of the Peculiar Plumbird’s nest at night and right outside you should see the Cryptid Moth flying.

Jelly Butterfly

“In Crystal Valley, by the Electric Lagoon, catch a Jellyfish to summon a butterfly or two. Place in World to make them appear, and then watch as Jelly Butterflies flutter near.”

The Jelly butterfly is an interesting one because you need to first catch a Jellyfish which you can do in the Crystal Valley neighbourhood. There is a small body of water in the right side of this neighbourhood where Jellyfish spawn.

A screenshot from The Sims 4 showing the location of the Jellyfish water spot

Travel to this area and have a sim with level two of the fishing skill go fishing for a jellyfish.

A screenshot from The Sims 4 showing a Jellyfish in a sim's inventory and then the option to place it in the world

Once you catch a jellyfish you’ll need to click on it from your sim’s inventory and choose place in world and your sim will place it on the ground. When you do this, a swarm of these butterflies will appear around it and you can catch them easily.

Red Admiral Butterfly

“Begin with Toshie in Jellyfish Junction’s heart. The Melody of the geyser is where you start. Investigate and return, then Boulder Strike. Watch the Red Admiral take its flight.”

To find the red admiral butterfly your sim will need to find Toshie Akamine who is the storyteller sim. Then, you’ll click on them and choose inquire about Adventure Quest.

A menu will appear and you want to choose Melody of the Geyser.

In this quest your sim will need to do a series of tasks including:

  • Investigate Ranger’s Station
  • Listen to the Story of the Melody of the Geyser
  • Investigate Story Map
  • Investigate Strange Boulder near Geyser

Once you complete these tasks you’ll be lead to a weird round boulder near the geyser. Your sim will need to investigate it, then smack it.

When you smack it fire will come out of the geyser and when that happens the Red Admiral butterfly will appear

Magical Origami Butterfly

“Crafted in magic, to life it springs, a butterfly of paper spreads its wings. Collect all other to see it thrive, placed in a habitat to come alive.”

This butterfly is only available to be discovered after you’ve caught the other 13 and have paper craft level 2. You’ll need to purchase the DIY Delight Papercrafting Kit and place it on a table in your sim’s home.

You can click on this kit and choose craft origami butterfly and it will cost you 1 simoleon. It will appear in your sim’s inventory but you aren’t done yet. You’ll need to place it inside of the Gibbi Point Butterfly & Moth Habitat that you can purchase from the build catalog.

You’ll click on the habitat and choose place butterflies or moths and then choose the Magical Butterfly Origami. When you do this the origami will turn into an actual butterfly and will look so cute.

Finishing the collection for all fourteen butterflies was a journey but it was really fun. Trying to figure out the riddles and get this completed brought me a lot of joy!
