The Sims 4 Imaginary Friends Guide
We’ve all been haunted by those little creeps from TS3 and now it’s time for Sims 4 Imaginary Friends!
With The Sims 4: Adventure Awaits we’ve experienced the return of these stuffed animals turned best friends for our sims.
Purchasing an Imaginary Friend
To have your sim get an imaginary friend you first need to purchase them a special doll. There are four types and all of their names end in ImagineMe! Doll so you know which ones to get.

You’ll place this in your sim’s house and they can chat with it and play with it as a regular doll.
Choosing Your Friend’s Personality
There are four personality types for imaginary friends and each corresponds to the four versions of dolls you can purchase.
- Goofball: A goofball imaginary friend will make your sim feel playful. They’ll encourage your sim to do fun activities and be playful. (Lil’ Monster)
- Competitive: A competitive imaginary friend will make your sim feel energized. They’ll often challenge your sim to competitive games like archery or video games. (Pretty Pegacorn)
- Creative: A creative imaginary friend will make your sim feel inspired. They’ll encourage them often to participate in creative pursuits! (KraftyKid)
- Evil: An evil imaginary friend will make your sim feel confident. However, they will convince your sim to do bad things and there’s a chance the child will even be able to start fires! (Wild Child)
The kinds of tasks you do with your imaginary friend is strongly influenced by their personality, so this is an important thing to change before bringing them to life.
How to Bring Your Imaginary Friend to Life
You obviously want to turn this into an imaginary friend, not just a doll. However, the option starts greyed out so you need to meet specific requirements first.

Once you have a doll in your sim’s house you have three ways you can bring it to life!
- Reach Level 3 Creativity Skill: Your sim can gain this skill by drawing on activity tables, doing paper crafting or playing the violin.
- Having a Low Social Need: If you let your sim’s social need get into the red they’ll be able to click the button to turn it into an imaginary friend.
- Befriending the Imaginary Friend: Getting your sim to around 40% friendship with their doll will unlock the option to turn it into an imaginary friend.
Once your sims satisfies one of these three requirements you’ll see the option turn into imaginary friend changes from being greyed out to something you can click on.

When you click on this you’ll get an action card asking if you’re sure and letting you know that you can’t change their name or personality after changing them, so you can click no and go back to change that first if you choose.

When you click yes the sim will do some hard thinking and some magic will happen. The imaginary friend will explore with colours out of the doll and you’ll have a new friend. You’ll get a notification with information and your sim can start chatting with their new friend.

Hanging Out With Your Imaginary Friend
Imaginary friends can do pretty much anything a regular sim child can do, so you have a lot of options of tasks you can do with your imaginary friend when they’re around.
The types of tasks you see when you click on the imaginary friend will depend on their personality, so it really is an important decision.
After a little bit of time with your sim you’ll get a notification called Bye for Now! where your imaginary friend will go back to Imaginary Land.

Do not panic! You can have them come back at any time by clicking on the doll and summoning them.

You can also send them back to imaginary land at any time to change them back into a doll until you summon them again.

Getting Praise from Your Imaginary Friend
One adorable part of having an imaginary friend is the praise you get from them. You’ll see tons of cute notifications come through when your sim does good things like winning games or getting good grades!

The types of praise you get depends on what kind of imaginary friend your sim has. So, an evil imaginary friend might praise your sim for starting a fire or doing something naughty while a creative one will praise them for good grades or drawing a picture.
Imaginary Boosts
When your sim becomes friends with their imaginary friend you can unlock the Imaginary Boost! interaction. You’ll need to get to at least 35% friendship with your imaginary friend by hanging out with them and doing friendly interactions.

Once you become friends you can go to the imaginary friend social menu and choose Imaginary Boost! This will give your sim a +4 moodlet that lasts a few hours but the type depends on what personality your imaginary friend has.
| Imaginary Friend Personality | Moodlet |
|---|---|
| Evil | +4 Confident Moodlet “Fearless Might” |
| Creative | +4 Inspired Moodlet “Reach for the Stars” |
| Competitive | +4 Energized Moodlet “ |
| Goofball | +4 Playful Moodlet |

What Happens When You Age Up?
These Sims 4 imaginary friends are only going to be around for children, so everyone is wondering what happens when your sim ages up. Well, you have a few options where you can say goodbye forever or you can actually turn it into a sim in your household.
Saying Goodbye to Your Sims 4 Imaginary Friend
At any time your sim’s child is able to click the say goodbye forever button and turn the imaginary friend back into a regular doll that won’t come to life.

When you click this you’ll see the imaginary friend turn into it’s life-like version. You’ll get an action card asking if you want to do this and if you say yes, the friend will give your sim a big hug and disappear forever.

Your sim will get a strong sad moodlet when you do this, so be prepared!

Turning Your Imaginary Friends into a Sim
When your sim ages up to a teenager they have the option to turn their imaginary friend into a sim. Doing this turns the imaginary friend into a regular sim that will join your sim’s household and you’ll need to care for them throughout their life like any other sim.
To do this you’ll click on your imaginary friend and choose offer to make real.
