The Sims 4 Entomology Skill Guide

Butterflies are my favourite bug so I’m obsessed with The Sims 4 Entomology Skill.

This skill from The Sims 4: Adventure Awaits will have your sim collecting butterflies and moths and raising them from caterpillars!

What is Entomology Good For?

Entomology is a fun skill to play around with because your sims are able to catch butterflies and moths around the world and keep them in a habitat. You can also raise caterpillars to have a large habitat of these insects all at once!

How to Gain The Sims 4 Entomology Skill

There are a few ways you can gain this skill, the first being by catching butterflies or moths. You’ll do this by looking around the world and when you see one clicking on it and choosing catch.

You can look in your sim’s notebook at any time to see riddles of where you’ll be able to find them if you’re having trouble locating each butterfly.

The next way you can gain the skill is by purchasing the Flutterarium Caterpillar Incubator for 15 simoleons.

You’ll click on it and choose start raising a caterpillar. Your only option at first will be a random one, but you’ll be able to raise one that will turn into a butterfly or moth.

Once you have a caterpillar in the habitat you can gain the sims 4 entomology skill by both feeding it and viewing it. However, these are interactions that have a cool down so you can’t do it super often.

Once the caterpillar goes into a cocoon you’ll have new options where you can view the cocoon which will gain the skill but has a cooldown where you can only do it to one every few hours. Or, you can choose to read to cocoon which you can do to each caterpillar you’re raising once a day.

Once the butterfly or moth leaves their cocoon your sim can gain the skill by gathering it to place it in their inventory.

You can also gain the entomology skill by examining butterflies and moths that you’ve grown or caught. Once you gather them or catch them you’ll see them in your inventory, drag them onto a table and click on them and choose examine and your sim will learn more about the species and gain the skill as well.

Ideal Mood for Entomology

A huge part of your sim’s life is their emotions and there is an ideal mood for every single skill in the game. Being in the right mood will help your sim gain the skill faster.

The ideal mood for the entomology skill is focused. The easiest way to get focused is to have your sim ponder moves on a chess board.

Best Traits for Gaining the Sims 4 Entomology Skill

The traits your sims have are super important to helping you gain skills quicker, so choosing smart ones is important. The following skills can help you have an easier time with gaining this skill:

  • Loves the Outdoors: This skill will have your sim needing to catch butterflies outdoors, so you want them to enjoy being outside!
  • Genius: Since the ideal mood for this skill is focused, genius is great. Genius sims get random focused moodlets that you can use to your advantage to earn the skill faster.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: This trait from the base game lets your sims start gaining skills slowly but boosts them later. However, it gives strong focused moodlets!

How to Cheat the Entomology Skill

Each skill we get for the game allows you to cheat it, which is my favourite thing. You can use stats.set_skill_level minor_entomology 5 to max out the skill and not have to put any effort into gaining it!

If you want a different level of the skill you can change the 5 at the end to whatever level of the skill you want your sim to have from 1 to 5.

Levels of the Sims 4 Entomology Skill

There are two types of skills in the game, major and minor. Entomology is considered a minor skill because it only has five levels to gain. This is nice because it can be maxed quickly but annoying because it has less gameplay.

Skill LevelLevel Unlocks
Level 1Your sim’s new skill in entomology will allow them to raise an unknown caterpillar in the Flutterarium Caterpillar Incubator.
Level 2Your sim can now have additional butterfly and moth outcomes when raising caterpillars in the incubator.
Level 3Your sim can now raise common caterpillar types in the Flutterarium Caterpillar Incubator. Raising an unknown caterpillar yields a small chance for uncommon butterflies and moths.
Level 4Your sim can now raise uncommon caterpillar types in the Flutterarium Caterpillar Incubator! Raising an unknown caterpillar yields a chance of rare butterflies and moths.
Level 5Your sim can now raise rare caterpillar types in the Flutterarium Caterpillar Incubator.

Improving The Skill with DLC

There is nothing I love more than cross pack compatibility so when a skill can be used with other packs, I love it. There are actually a few ways to use the sims 4 entomology skill with other packs.

Eco Lifestyle

Your sims can gain the skill when they are playing around with the insect farms from The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle. This is nice because you can have a few different ways to gain the skill instead of just with butterflies and moths.

Seasons

Your sims can gain this skill when they are using the bee box with The Sims 4: Seasons. This box is great for having better quality gardening plants so it’s nice that you can gain the skill with the bee box too!

Outdoor Retreat

With The Sims 4: Outdoor Retreat we got a lot of interesting bugs to play around with, and you can gain the entomology skill by catching these bugs too! You’ll only get a few percent per catch, but it can add up over the course of a camping vacation.
