The first requirement to read to your child is to have appropriately aged books. If you want to read to a toddler you’ll need toddler books and if you want to read to a child you’ll need children’s books!
To see what kinds of books you already have you can click on a bookcase and choose open and when you hover over books you can see what type they are. You can see it visually too, with children’s books being white and purple and toddler books being smaller than others.
If you don’t have the right level of book you can click on the bookcase and use the purchase books options to get them.
Once you have the book you need you can click on the bookcase and open it and drag the book into your sim’s inventory. Then, you can click on it and choose read to child and a menu will open letting you pick which kid.
Your sim and their child will find somewhere to sit and start reading together and it’s super sweet!
