The Sims 4 Media Production Skill Guide
If you want your sims to be famous online they need the sims 4 media production skill.
The Sims 4: Get Famous is an expansion pack that came out in the era of everyone wanting to be a Youtuber on a hover board.
So of course, this pack comes with a skill that lets your sims create and upload video content and make their own music!
What is Media Production Good For?
The media production skill is actually an incredible way to make money in this game.
You can decide to make music and sign with a label with the music station and release songs to earn royalties. Or you can decide to make and upload videos!
Either of these tasks will gain you daily royalties at 10 AM that can add up and stack!
How to Gain The Media Production Skill
The first way you can gain this skill is through the Mix Master Music Station.

You’ll want to click on this and choose produce new track and then pick one of the options given to you.

Your sim will continue to gain the skill anytime they are producing tracks on this machine. You also have the option to remix the song and add more to it to increase its quality.

Once you decide your sim has produced for long enough, you can burn the track and it will go into your sim’s inventory ready for release so you can earn money!

The next way you can earn the media production skill is by using the More Views Video Station.

When using the video station your sim won’t gain the skill when recording a video, they will gain it when doing anything in the editing department like adding effects. They will however, gain the charisma skill when recording!
Ideal Mood for Media Production
There are so many moods in The Sims 4 and each positive mood has skills attached to it. If your sim is in the right mood they can gain the skills more quickly than before.
The ideal mood for media production is going to be inspired. You can easily get your sims inspired by taking a thoughtful shower!
Best Traits for Media Production
The traits you give your sims matter! This means you need to think of the skills you want for a sim when creating a sim! The best traits for sims who want to get into media production are:
- Creative: Sims with the creative trait are incredible for this because they get random inspired moodlets that will help skill gains
- Cheerful: The best thing about cheerful is those random happy moodlets you get. These can boost inspired!
- Loner: Media production is a solo gig, you won’t be spending time with others very often so being a loner can stop your social need from emptying too quick.
How to Cheat The Media Production Skill
If you want to have your sims creating higher quality items without having to earn the skill, you can cheat it instead. The cheat you need to know is stats.set_skill_level minor_mediaproduction 5 to max the skill.
If you want your sim to have a different level of the skill you can change the 5 at the end to whatever level of the skill you’d like to have.
Levels of Media Production
Media production is considered a minor skill, this means that there are only five levels of the skill for your sim to gain. As you gain it you’ll get new unlocks and abilities.
| Skill Level | Level Unlocks |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | Your sim can continue building the skill by using the Mix Master Music Production Station, The More Views Video Station, or either Streaming Drone. |
| Level 2 | Your sim is learning the ins and outs of producing digital content. They can now add transitions to videos on the video station and has more tracks and remixes available on the music station. |
| Level 3 | Gettin’ likes ain’t easy. But your sim makes it look like it is. They can now add effects and combine videos on the video station. |
| Level 4 | Hashtagging has become second nature to your sim! They can now produce more tracks and have additional remix options on the music station. |
| Level 5 | Your sim has mastered the media production skill, their work will be of higher quality. |
Producing Tracks
Your sims are able to produce songs all the time to create beautiful music that you can release for money or you can play them on radios in your sim’s house!
THIS IS NOT GLITCHED. I’ve seen many people think that the music production system is glitched. Your sims will continue producing tracks until you tell them to stop. You need to burn the track to get it in your inventory, it doesn’t happen automatically.
Remixing Tracks
One thing you can do while you’re producing songs is remixing the tracks, this is a fun way to add different sounds to the music that you can hear when the music is played on radios.

I didn’t find an intense quality improvement from remixing, it was more based on skill level and time spent producing. So, maybe remix, maybe don’t, it’s up to you.
Releasing Tracks
After you’ve produced a new track and chosen burn track you’ll find it available in your sim’s inventory and you are able to release the song to the Simify Service by clicking it and choosing release. This is going to get your sims some royalties every morning at 10 AM.
This is great for some extra cash, however, you can’t release unlimited songs. I found I was allowed to release a song every 24 hours but outstanding quality songs made a lot of money, some getting thousands!
Increasing Track Quality
The best way to make more money from your music is to increase the track quality, this is also the best way to get yourself signed to a label.
There are two large factors that I found that work to increase quality. The first is level of the skill, a sim with level 5 will make more high quality items.

The second thing is time spent. I did a test and got my sim to start producing and hit burn immediately and with level 5 of the skill it was normal quality. Then, I got my sim to produce for two hours and it that track was oustanding quality!
Signing With a Label
When you burn a track you have the option to click on it to send it to a record label. Don’t do this unless the track is high quality! Sending poor quality tracks is pointless and you’ll get notifications that will just make you 1feel bad about your sim’s abilities.

Once your sim makes their first outstanding quality track, I’d send it to a record label. You’ll get a notification that it was sent and then you’ll wait until you get a no or a yes.

I eventually got a phone call from Mortimer Goth (since when is he a music producer? haha) and was able to say “ok” not “yes” which is silly. This got me signed and started earning me more money!

Now instead of just release it says release track under label when you click on the track in your sim’s inventory.

Once in a while you’ll get texts or calls from your label if you aren’t releasing enough tracks. If you don’t release music you have a chance to get dropped from your label.

You can also use the phone to check in with your label and you’ll get a notification. This will tell you how many songs you’ve released and how long you have until you need to release another to avoid getting dropped by the label.

Making & Uploading Videos
Making videos is one of my favourite ways to earn an income because the royalties just keep on coming and you can release as many videos as you want.
Studying Trends
Before you start recording videos on the video station you’ll want to study trends. This is going to tell you what kinds of videos are currently trending and try to make these videos.

It will tell you different types of vlogs you can record on the video station easily and you can also do skill-based videos. You can record this video footage using one of the drones, choose start recording, do the task, and then transfer the footage to the video station to edit and upload.
Increasing Video Quality
If you want to make more money in royalties for your videos you’ll want to make sure that they are a high quality.

There’s a few ways you can increase the video’s quality, starting with maxing out the skill. Sims with level 5 of the media production skill will get higher quality videos.
The next thing you can do is edit the video and add transitions and effects. However, when your skill is low there’s a chance these can make the video worse, oops!
Video Royalties

Once you upload videos you’ll start getting royalties each day at 10 am. The amount of royalties you get depends on the quality of the video you upload.
You’ll see the royalties start to decrease as time goes on, if you want to boost them again for a short time you can click on the video station and choose post updates > promote old videos and you’ll get a small boost.

Streaming With Drones
I found that using drones for streaming didn’t earn my sims the media production skill, but it is still a fun thing to play with. You are able to begin streaming with these and it will follow you sim around until the battery dies.

You can do pretty much anything while streaming, including making new music to earn money!

As you stream you’ll start gaining followers and get notifications about your followers often.

Upgrading Your Equipment
Adding upgrades to your equipment is a must. But you will first need your sims to have the handiness skill!
Upgrading The Video Station

If you want to get the most out of the video station you’ll want to make some handiness skill upgrades. These improve your videos and your experience so much.
- Install Auto Updater: Makes the more views video station unbreakable
- Requires 4 Electronic & 2 Common Upgrade Parts
- Add Increased Memory: Editing videos takes less time
- Requires 2 Electronic & 1 Common Upgrade Part
- Create Light Controller: Gives the complete light options
- Requires 1 Electronic Upgrade Part
Upgrading Your Drone

If you want your sim to stream all the time you’ll need to make some handiness skill upgrades to your drone. Unfortunately the battery will still die even with upgrades, but it’s worth the effort.
- Insert Lithium Battery: Improves the battery life of the streaming drone
- Requires 1 Electronic & 2 Common Upgrade Parts
- Install HD Camera: Improves the quality of videos the streaming drone produces
- Requires 2 Electronic & 4 Common Upgrade Parts
- Swap in Reliable Components: Makes the streaming drone break less often
- Requires 2 Electronic & 3 Common Upgrade Parts
